Most professionals tend to give breakfast minimal attention even though it is a significant meal of the day.
I understand mornings can be crazy and sometimes used to also leave the house without having breakfast. But is this healthy? How am I to gain energy to get me through the day? These are the questions I started asking myself until I realized that missing breakfast is doing me more harm than good.
Here is the thing, when we wake in the morning, our blood sugar levels are at fasting levels and thus need to be replenished. Both the brain and body need glucose to function properly, and the only way to supply the body with enough glucose is through carbohydrates such as bread, cereals, pasta, vegetables, and fruits. So when we wake up, our blood sugar level is way below than it should be and if we fail to eat breakfast, then the brain starts to think that the body is starving.
What happens when the brain thinks you are starving? The symptoms will start to show. From fatigue, irritability, headaches, hunger pangs, mood swings, and even nausea. This is no way to get through a day.
When the body is inflow glucose state, we respond by eating to give it what it needs. This is when we resort to eating cakes, coffee, etc. instinctively; we just know that carbohydrates with white flour and sugar will make the body relax. But what we don’t realize is that these food choices have severe consequences.
Such meals tend to be broken down into sugar that is then quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. The pancreas then responds to this sudden increase in sugar levels by releasing insulin to presumably help the excess sugar to go to where it is supposed to be; the brain, liver, muscle and fat cells. When thisis done, the glucose levels go under, and the cycle starts all over again.
For most people this cycle repeats up to 4 to 5 times a day and overtime the pancreas get exhausted, we increase inflammation and eventually there is trouble losing excess weight, feeling energetic, staying healthy and even fighting off serious illness.
The good news is that this cycle can be broken. We can break it. And the moment I released that I can do, I did it. You can too. Just begin the day with a well-balanced meal, and you will be much more energized, clear, balanced and feel good throughout the day.
The best way to do this I discovered is to start the day with a healthy vegetable and fruit smoothie particularly when the time is of the essence.
All it takes is a blender, some filtered water, fruits and green leafy veggies. The fiber in the fruit and vegetables slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream so that your energy stays consistent over time and the pancreas is not overloaded. The protein in the green leafy vegetables helps build the body up, and the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants ensure a very healthy beginning to a busy day.
If you are a beginner, start with more fruit and fewer vegetables as these are sometimes hard to consume for most people. As you progress, you can introduce sweeter vegetables like lettuce and spinach. You can also make an avocado smoothie mixed with cucumber and parsley for a healthy morning
As your body adjusts to the taste of fresh, green leafy vegetables, you will naturally start adding more until your smoothie is more of vegetables and less of fruits.
Well, you can choose to eat cakes and to drink coffee but be warned, once you start on this healthy journey you won’t look at the cakes anymore.
